By Carol Alyysius
The are Malaysian closest parallel to France's Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF), a team of medical practitioners who have volunteered to share their knowledge and skills around the world for a short period of times every year, free of charge.
Every year under their own banner Homeopathic Doctors Without Barriers around fifty homeopathic doctors from Malaysia are now doing the same things, concentrating mostly on thord world countries like Shri Lanka, Pakistan, Thailand and Inbdia.
The association commonly known as "MRHP" was set up in 1979 at Kota Bharu by Dr Nik Omar bin Nik Daud, the President of Malaysian Homeopathic Medical Practitioners Association. Its goal " Providing low levels of medical provision"
Now in Shri Lanka to attend the 4th Asian Homeopathic Medical Congress, which open yesterday in Colombo, these doctors arrived here a week ago, have already conducted a free clinic for shanty-dwellers living on banks of the Wellawatte Canal and also at Malay community areas near Padang at Colombo.
Says Dr Nik Omar, the leader of the three member team of the health camp just concluded " It is a truly rewarding experience and in many ways an eye opener to us. We had about a hundred patients - children and adult, whom we examined and give free medicine who we brought from Malaysia. We were suprised at the number of cases of eye diseases including catarct we dectected, especially among young children and widespread were the worms infection."
